Taichung Power Plant was built in the 1970s in order to cooperate with the country's long-term economic development and energy diversification policies, as well as in response to the rapid increase in electricity consumption due to the developed industry and commerce in the central of Taiwan.
Taichung Power Plant covers an area of 276.2 hectares. It is a new land reclaimed from the Taichung Port Channel. In order to balance the distribution of base load power plants and provide high-quality, cheap and reliable power, Taipower Corporation decided to build it.
Taichung Power Plant is also the first power plant to be built after passing an environmental impact assessment, and it is a park-like power plant.
In addition to 10 coal-fired units, the Taichung Thermal Power Plant also has 4 gas turbine units, with a total installed capacity of 5,780MW.
