To take a big leap forward in carbon reduction and net-zero emission, Taipower announced its 2050 "net-zero electricity" goal in April this year (2022) and signed a collaboration agreement on gas-hydrogen co-firing technology with Siemens Energy. Today (November 16), Taipower further joined up with Japan's Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Mitsubishi Corporation, and signed a "Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on coal-ammonia co-firing technology" to promote for the first time the coal-ammonia co-firing power generation in Linkou Power Plant. Taipower stated that the use of low-carbon energy has become a global trend. The goal of this agreement is to achieve 5% co-firing of ammonia at the coal-fired power plant in Linkou by 2030. If the 5% target is reached, it is expected to help Linkou Power Plant reduce carbon emissions by 9,000 tons per year, which is equivalent to the annual carbon absorption of 23 Da'an Forest Parks.
Taipower held a signing ceremony for the "Memorandum of Understanding on Ammonia Co-firing Technology Cooperation" at the Okura Prestige Taipei this morning. At the event, President of Taipower, Mr. Yao-Ting Wang; CEO of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries' Energy and Power Division, Mr. Toshiyuki Hashi; General Manager of Mitsubishi Corporation's Next-generation Fuels & Petroleum Business Division, Mr. Hiroki Haba; and General Manager/CEO of Mitsubishi Corporation Machinery, Mr. Taku Nakajima jointly signed the agreement. In addition, Deputy CEO of the Taiwan-Japan Industrial Collaboration Promotion Office (TJPO) Chian-yi Weng and other distinguished guests were invited to attend the event.

Taipower strives to achieve a balance between a stable power supply and environmental protection, said Yao-ting Wang, the President of Taipower. Facing the challenge of net-zero emissions, in addition to actively developing renewable energy and energy storage systems, Taipower also continues to promote the upgrade of thermal power plant units and utilize clean energy to gradually move from low-carbon to zero-carbon power generation. Following the previous test of gas-hydrogen co-firing units, Taipower signed a cooperation agreement today on coal-ammonia co-firing technology, hoping to leverage Mitsubishi's professional and international experience to practice new energy applications.
The CEO of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries' Energy and Power Division, Mr. Toshiyuki Hashi said that it is a great honor to collaborate with Taipower. The signing of the MOU today will officially start the technical cooperation between the two parties. He looks forward to combining Mitsubishi's innovative technology and Taipower's strong power plant operation experience to smoothly promote this co-firing demonstration project.
Taipower explained that ammonia does not produce carbon dioxide when it burned, and can be stored in a liquefied state at a low temperature of -33°C, exhibiting carbon reduction advantages, high transportation efficiency and low storage cost. Furthermore, since the heating value of burning ammonia is similar to that of coal, it can be done using existing high-efficiency coal-fired units. Recently, countries around the world have actively invested in the research and development of related technologies. Mitsubishi has not only collaborated with Taipower to promote this co-firing demonstration project, but also with JERA, the largest power generation company in Japan.
Taipower pointed out that this technical cooperation chose the Linkou Power Plant for the coal-ammonia co-firing demonstration site. Linkou Power Plant collaborates with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Mitsubishi Corporation, the original manufacturers of its coal-fired power generating units, to promote the "Coal-Ammonia Co-firing Demonstration Project" for the existing ultra-supercritical coal-fired units. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Mitsubishi Corporation Machinery will carry out the feasibility assessment of boiler modifications and R&D for coal-ammonia co-firing technology. Moreover, the modification and co-firing tests for coal-fired units will be conducted. Mitsubishi Corporation is responsible for planning an ammonia supply chain. It's hoped that by leveraging its international experience in ammonia co-firing technology, an existing ultra-supercritical coal-fired unit may be upgraded and incorporate this co-firing capability. The goal is to complete a power generation demonstration unit with 5% ammonia co-firing between 2028 and 2030. Calculated on the basis of one hour of co-firing operations per day at the initial stage, 9,000 tons of carbon emissions will be reduced each year, equivalent to the annual carbon adsorption of 23 Da'an Forest Parks. In the future, depending on the development of technologies around the world, the percentage of co-firing will be increased to 20%, and it will be extended to other units.

Taipower stated that in addition to combining gas-hydrogen and coal-ammonia co-firing power generation demonstrations with emerging low-carbon energy applications, it will also build a carbon capture system at its Taichung Power Plant that can capture 2,000 tons of carbon per year. Moreover, the existing power plants will continue to promote low-carbon gas-fired unit upgrade plans. With the launching of the Offshore Wind Farm Phase II project this month, it's expected that 1,000 GWh of carbon-free green electricity will be supplied in the future. Taipower will continue to move forward to achieve the goal of net-zero electricity through diversified approaches.
