a charging plate that resembles the shape of a manhole cover

  • By connecting the image of Taipower's manhole cover with the popular wireless charging technology, a charging plate that resembles the shape of a manhole cover was developed by Chen-Guang Liu, winning the first prize of the Creative Design category.

In recent years, Taipower has been committed to energy transformation and has also promoted the reutilization of retired power equipment materials to create a sustainable environment through circular economy. The theme of the 21st Taipower "kW Design Award" this year is based on "renewable energy" and "environmental sustainability". People from all walks of life and students were invited to participate in the event, attracting a record high of nearly 3,500 entries. Taipower recently announced the list of winners, giving birth to nearly 40 design talents. Among them, the charging plate that resembles the shape of a "manhole cover", and the wind chime made of retired insulators combined with Taipower’s electric pole number plate are both practical and eye-catching, earning recognition from the kW Design Award for their creativity. Currently, the winning designs have been posted on the official website of the event. During the pandemic, those who are interested in the designs are welcome to enjoy them online.

  • The winners of the 21st Taipower "kW Design Award" have been announced earlier. In addition to posting on the official website, the designs will also be exhibited on the first-floor west corridor of Taipei Main Station.

Taipower has been organizing the national power promotion for schools and related competition activities for 21 years, said Taipower. It is hoped that through this event, students from universities/colleges and high schools/vocational high schools will gain better knowledge about electricity. The competition has attracted a total of 3,477 outstanding designs. Furthermore, Taipower has invited 42 experts from the academic circle and the industry, including Jimmy Chang, who served as the curator of the Asia Pacific Film Festival and the Taiwan Lantern Festival, Feng Yu, who designed the logo for the 100th anniversary of the presidential office building, and Shi-Yan Li, who won the Lions Award at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, to form the judging panel. In the end, a total of 38 outstanding designs were listed as the winners and a total of NT$695,000 prize money was awarded.

Taipower pointed out that the theme of this year’s Award is "Renewable Energy" and "Environmental Sustainability", encouraging participants to integrate power issues with aesthetics, and bringing creativity as well as imagination into full play. The Award also offers the "Social Group" category for applicants who are already in the workforce. In addition to "Poster Design" and "Creative Short Films", the Award also added the "Creative Product Design" category to encourage participants to integrate Taipower’s brand image and other characteristic elements into the design, developing both creative and practical promotional gifts for Taipower. In the future Taipower will also consider the mass production of these designs.

Among the winners of the Award, a student from China University of Technology, Li-Yue Jiang, got his inspiration from wind turbines since he lives in Taoyuan. He often sees many wind turbines in the coastal area of Taoyuan, which gave him the idea to link between wind turbine and electric fan, illustrating with the minimalist style the journey of converting natural wind to electricity via wind turbine and then back to wind via electric fan. He won the first prize for the poster design award of the student group. As for the creative short film award of the student group, the film “If Without You” produced by a team of students from Youth Senior High School, Taichung, including Wei-Xin Zhuang, Xin-Yao Lin, Xuan-Cheng Huang, Pei-Qi Lai and Yi-Jin Chen, won the first prize. They adopted the one-shot shooting technique to demonstrate the contribution of renewable energy, such as solar photovoltaic power and hydro power, to Taiwan, earning recognition from the judging panel.

The "Creative Design" category, which was added for the first time this year, attracted nearly 400 entries. The first prize of the category was won by the "Best Taiwan Charging Platform--Taipower Charging Plate" designed by Chen-Guang Liu. He explained that the image of Taipower's manhole cover is deeply rooted in people's mind. By connecting it with the popular wireless charging technology, a charging plate that resembles the shape of a manhole cover was developed, symbolizing Taipower’s role as an electricity provider. The first runner-up of the category was won by the “Insulator Wind Chime” designed by Yu-Xuan Wang and Ming-Hong Zheng of Shu-Te University. Based on the concept of circular economy, they cleverly combined retired power equipment materials, voltage insulator, with the unique Taipower electric pole number plate to create a wind chime with local story.

Since the establishment of the "kW Design Award" in 2018, the event has gradually transformed its emphasis to brand management and has become the only electricity-themed design award in Taiwan, said Taipower. It encourages designers to combine aesthetic thinking and power issues with "creative energy", incorporating the theme of the event into the design and applying them to real life. In addition to posting on the official website (https://kwd.tw/tw/), the winning designs of this year’s kW Design Award will also be exhibited on the first-floor west corridor of Taipei Main Station from July 1st to the end of July. If the pandemic eases, we welcome people who are interested to visit the exhibition with appropriate social distancing.
