Following the completion of Taiwan’s largest 100MW (100,000 kW) solar photovoltaic power plant in the Changhua Coastal Industrial Park in 2019, Taipower further utilized the abandoned salt fields, with a total area of 214 hectares, in the Jiangjun District and the Qigu District of Tainan last year to build the largest ground-based solar photovoltaic power plant in Taiwan. The Tainan Salt-Field Solar Photovoltaic Power Plant with installed capacity of 150 MW (150,000 kW) is consisted of 480,000 photovoltaic panels. Today (March 31), Taipower held the opening ceremony for the Power Plant. After completing this project, the Power Plant was ranked the 46th largest in the world. The project also formed the "MIT renewable energy industry chain", which is jointly created by nearly 10 domestic equipment suppliers. Once the Power Plant begins to operate, it can generate more than 200 GWh of green electricity annually, enough to power 50,000 households for one year. In addition, the Power Plant also brings the benefit of reducing 114,000 tons of carbon emission each year, while maintaining the existing flood detention function of the site.
Taipower held the “Turning Tainan into a Green Energy City with Hundred-Gigawatt-Hour Renewable Electricity”, an opening ceremony for the Tainan Salt-Field Solar Photovoltaic Power Plant, this afternoon (March 31). During the ceremony, Premier Tseng-Chang Su (Executive Yuan), Minister Mei-Hua Wang of Ministry of Economic Affairs, Minister Jain-Rong Su of Ministry of Finance, Tainan City Mayor Wei-Che Huang, and Taipower Chairman Wei-Fuu Yang witnessed the official operation of Taiwan’s largest ground-based photovoltaic power plant or the 46th largest in the world, and the birth of the MIT renewable energy industry chain, which is the pride of Taiwan.
Taipower explained that the Tainan Salt-Field Solar Photoelectric Power Plant utilized the abandoned 214 hectares of salt fields in Jiangjun District and the Qigu District of Tainan, cost NT$ 9.65 billion and used more than 480,000 high-efficiency solar panels in construction. In coping with the local environment, two types of construction modes were adopted, namely the ground-based construction and the floating-type construction. Nearly 40,000 concrete foundation piles were installed, and the photovoltaic panels were elevated at a height of 2.1 meters to create the Taiwan's largest photovoltaic power plant with an installed capacity of 150 MW, while maintaining the existing flood detention function of the salt fields. In this project, everything from solar panels, power and communication cables, supports, foundation piles, to converters and step-up transformers that help delivering the generated electricity to the grid, are all manufactured and provided by local suppliers.
- The Tainan Solar Photovoltaic Power Plant has an installed capacity of 150 MW (150,000 kW) and is expected to be fully connected to the grid before the end of August this year. It will generate 200 GWh of green electricity annually, enough to power more than 50,000 households for one year.
- Taipower held the opening ceremony of the Tainan Salt-Field Solar Photovoltaic Power Plant today. During the ceremony, Premier Tseng-Chang Su presented the awards to the members of the MIT renewable energy industry chain who participated in the project, expressing gratitude.
Taipower pointed out that 150 MW of the Tainan Salt-Field Solar Photovoltaic Power Plant was officially connected to the grid on September 14, 2020. As of February 12, 2021, the Power Plant has generated 100 GWh of electricity. Currently, it can generate an average of about 615,000 kWh of electricity per day. As of March 30, 2021, the has generated 120 GWh of electricity. After the official operation today, it is expected to generate more than 200 GWh of electricity annually, providing the electricity needed to power approximately 57,000 households for one year and bringing the benefit of reducing 114,000 tons of carbon emission each year.
The construction of the Tainan Salt-Field Solar Photovoltaic Power Plant is in line with the local environment and culture, said Taipower. In addition to harmonizing the solar panels with the image of the fan-shaped salt fields and the travelling of milkfish as well as migrant birds in groups, the area of the construction site was voluntarily reduced to reserve space for plants, bird habitat, trails and scenic overlooks. Furthermore, a 15-MW energy storage system was installed next to the Power Plant, allowing the electricity generated by the solar panels during the day to be stored and the stored electricity to be provided at night when needed. It is hoped that the Tainan Salt-Field Photovoltaic Power Plant can serve as a multi-functional site for power generation, energy management applications and ecological education.
