Taipower held the opening ceremony for the 2021 Environmental Month today (May 11), reviewing the achievements of environmental protection in 2020. The air pollution emission intensity of thermal power generating units has dropped by 62% compared with 2016, achieving the goal of 60% reduction by 2025 in advance. Electricity consumption continued to increase with the growth of economic development, said Taipower. Last year, the national power generation (238,900 GWh) was increased by 13,000 GWh compared with 2016. However, under the tremendous effort in air pollution prevention and control, the total air pollution emissions have been greatly reduced by nearly 60,000 tons. The Taichung Power Plant alone has reduced its emissions by more than 20,000 tons, a reduction of nearly 60% compared with 2014. Furthermore, coal consumption has been substantially reduced by more than 6 million tons, reaching a record low. Taipower is committed to following the "Coal Reduction, Gas Increasing, Green Expansion, and Non-Nuclear” energy transformation policy, aiming to reach a balance between power supply stabilization and environmental protection.
Taipower held the opening ceremony for the 2021 Taipower Environment Month at the Taipower Building this afternoon. This year, the event is based on the theme of "Electricity, Circulation and Symbiosis", and the achievements of Taipower in environmental protection in 2020 were reviewed based on the three aspects of "Responding to Climate Change", "Focusing on Circular Innovation" and "Creating Ecological Integration". During the ceremony, Taipower Chairman Wei-Fuu Yang, President Bing-Li Zhong, Deputy Minister Shen Chih-hsiu of the Environmental Protection Administration, Chairman of the Taiwan Institute for Sustainable Energy Eugene Chien, and other distinguished guests from various industries together witnessed the achievements.

Taipower pointed out that in recent years, it has been committed to energy and organizational transformation, and working on sustainable issues such as friendly environment. In addition to the continuous promotion of air pollution reduction in power plants, and introduction of ecological integration, Taipower also promotes the R&D for the regeneration and recycling of decommissioned materials in the power industry. The Environmental Month has become a big annual event for Taipower. It is hoped that through this event, the determination of Taipower in becoming a comprehensive green enterprise can seen by the public.
Taipower Chairman Wei-Fuu Yang said that the long-established global order has been altered tremendously in 2020 due to the COVID-19 epidemic. However, as the result of the efforts from the government and everyone involved in epidemic prevention, Taiwanese businesses in China have been indirectly affected, leading to the promotion of economic transformation, including the returning of some businesses in China to Taiwan and the localization of the supply chain. Such changes have increased the annual electricity consumption of Taiwan in 2020. For this reason, Taipower has indeed played a key role in stabilizing the power supply and promoting social and economic development of Taiwan.
- Taipower held the opening ceremony for the 2021 Environmental Month today. Looking back on the past year, air pollution emission intensity of thermal power generating units has dropped significantly by 62% compared with 2016, achieving the goal of 60% reduction by 2025 in advance. The picture shows Taipower Chairman Wei-Fuu Yang.
Looking back on the past year, Taipower continued to reduce the emission of pollutants, making every effort to protect the environment. For example, in 2020, air pollution emissions from thermal power generating units were reduced by 62% compared to 2016, outperforming the short-term target set for 2021 (30%). In the aspect of "Responding to Climate Change", Taipower also took the initiative in reducing carbon emissions. The net carbon dioxide emissions of thermal power generating units have been reduced by 6.52% compared to 2016. It is expected that the short-term target for 2021 (7%) can be achieved as scheduled. With the efforts of the Taichung Power Plant such as “reducing the power output”, “implementing environmental protection shutdown,” and “increasing voluntary coal reduction,” the reduction in coal consumption and air pollutant emissions continues to improve year by year. Air pollutant emissions have been reduced from nearly 40,000 tons in 2014 to 16,000 tons in 2020, a reduction percentage of nearly 60%.
- Deputy Minister Shen Chih-hsiu of the Environmental Protection Administration said in his speech at the Taipower’s Environment Month this afternoon that Taipower not only stabilizes power supply, but also protects the environment. For example, the air pollutant emissions of Taichung Power Plant has dropped from 37,000 tons in 2016 to 16,000 tons in 2020, an emission reduction of nearly 58%, while the air pollutant emissions of the Xingda Power Plant in Kaohsiung have also been reduced by 57%.
Taipower explained that in the aspect of "Focusing on Circular Innovation", it will continue to promote circular economy. In addition to the popular TPCreative that participated in the 2021 Creative Expo Taiwan last month, Taipower also collaborated with the C-Hub of NCKU, utilizing Taipower's decommissioned materials to create sustainable home products. The circular economy exhibition, "Going Home", will be held at the 9th floor of the Shin Kong Mitsukoshi Taipei Xinyi Place A9 from May 13th to 30th. Products that can be seen in the exhibition include Bluetooth speakers and light boxes that are made of decommissioned electric meters, or seats made of electric fuse holders, etc. In terms of "Creating Ecological Integration", Taipower has now completed the establishment of ecological site promotion ranking index system. It is expected that the first ecological integration project will be completed at the Yunlin Taixi Onshore Wind Farm by the end of this year.
Taipower stated that in order to show its commitment to environmental protection, it will select 8 sites including power plants and district offices across Taiwan for this year’s Environmental Month, taking the achievements of the sites based on their long-term efforts in environmental protection as the highlights, and conduct related environmental education as well as ecological experiencing and touring guides activities, such as the lily ecological education activity of the Linkou Power Plant, the attracting of butterflies with honey plants and the environment touring activity of the Dajiaxi Power Plant, the ecological integration activity of the Taichung Power Plant–Results of firefly restoration, the ecological integration activity of the Zhuolan Power Plant, the activity of bringing home the special orchids from Lanyu for restoration by the Nuclear Backend Department of Taipower, and the circular economy activity of experiencing the making of products by using decommissioned wood pallets from the Taipower’s district offices in Yunlin and Chiayi.
