In response to the establishment of the 5G AIoT Innovation Park in the Asia New Bay Area by the Kaohsiung City Government, Taipower took the lead among the state-owned enterprises to set up the “Taipower 5G AIoT Promotion Office” at the Nanpu Power Plant today (May 12). To adhere to the policy of energy transformation, Taipower will continue to promote the digital transformation of smart grids, and coordinate with the development of 5G AIoT technology, said Taipower. It is expected that smart grid applications will be combined with the infrastructure and technological capability of the 5G AIoT Innovation Park in the Asia New Bay Area to realize the digital transformation of smart energy, further improving the quality of power supply.
Taipower held the "opening ceremony for the Taipower 5G AIoT Promotion Office" at the Nanpu Power Plant in the Asia New Bay Area of Kaohsiung this morning. Taipower Chairman Wei-Fuu Yang and Kaohsiung Mayor Chi-Mai Chen, Deputy Minister Wen-Sheng Tseng (Ministry of Economic Affairs), and distinguished guests from Chunghwa Telecom, FETnet, Asia Pacific Telecom, and Taiwan Fixed Network together witnessed Taipower’s establishment of the 5G AIoT Promotion Office, which is the first among the state-owned enterprises. During the ceremony, four smart power applications, including Taipower drones, robots, mixed reality smart inspections, and virtual reality industrial safety education and training, were demonstrated and the Forum on 5G AIoT Power Application Technologies was held during the event.

Taipower pointed out that in recent years, it has been committed to promoting digital transformation and innovative applications such as smart power and IoT (Internet of Things) power. For example, in Kinmen, a smart grid that integrates power generation, power storage and power consumption was built. In Taiwan, smart power has been widely used in automatic feeder, and smart meter (or advanced metering infrastructure, AMI) that can send back information in real time and accurately control the electricity consumption of millions of households, reducing the impact of power outages.
In recent years, Taipower has also engaged in the development of "smart inspections". On-site maintenance personnel can use wearable glasses to connect with experts in real-time and remotely through mixed reality (MR), improving maintenance efficiency. In addition, Taipower has combined robots and drones to assist personnel in carrying out inspection operations for substations, transmission towers and power cables. As for the safety training of personnel, virtual reality (VR) technology was adopted to simulate different climate conditions and operating environments for the training.

Over the past years, Taipower continued to promote digital transformation and smart grids, striving to make power generation, dispatching, transmission and distribution smarter to further improve the quality of power supply. In response to the rising demand of smart power applications, such as renewable energy, energy storage systems, power plant monitoring, smart meters (or advanced metering infrastructure, AMI) , and smart inspections, besides relying on building its own optical fiber network throughout Taiwan, Taipower will also utilize the "5G AIoT Promotion Office" established today as an open collaboration platform and application verification site to combine the technological capabilities of telecommunication operators, system integrators and cloud operators in the Asia New Bay Area of Kaohsiung to reinforce power grid, and strengthen the performance of smart grid through AI and data analysis.
