In 1994, Taipower launched a beach cleaning on the eve of the Mid-Autumn Festival, and the event has continued for 27 consecutive years. This year, the event is simultaneously launched in 10 counties and cities across the country today (26th). Taipower has recruited 7,000 people from 24 units to participate in the clean-up to make moon gazing during the Mid-Autumn Festival even better! Taipower said that this year’s cooperation with the Society of Wilderness to clean up the beach of the Gaomei Wetland will focus on "not only picking but also reducing" garbage, and no additional single-use supplies will be used throughout the beach cleaning. Taipower continues to collaborate with the John Tung Foundation in its 2020 Clean Heart Clean Beach operation. The weight of the collected garbage is converted into donations to help promote depression prevention on campus.
Taipower indicates that in the beach cleaning operation this year, about 7,000 Taipower employees from 24 units and members of the public from 10 counties and cities across the country, including outlying islands, responded to the call to participate. Taipower Chairman Yang Wei-Fuu also participated in the Taichung Gaomei Wetland beach clean-up with other fellow employees. Today, a total of 16,500 kilograms of garbage was picked up from all over Taiwan.
Data shows that about 80% of marine wastes are single-use plastic products that are nonbiodegradable. Therefore, in this year's beach clean-up, Taipower has set the theme of "Saluting the Sea". Collaborating for the first time with the Society of Wilderness in a cross-industrial cooperation, the event promotes the philosophy of "Not only picking up garbage but also reducing garbage". Participants in the beach clean-up are required to bring their own utensils, water bottles, rain gear and other items so that the beautiful ocean beaches do have to bear the extra burden of plastic waste from the beach cleaning activities. In addition, to implement the idea of environmental protection in every detail, reusable stage vehicles and news ticker are used for the first time this year in the beach clean-up to replace the previous use of single-use venue decorations.
Taipower explains that Taipower is committed to both stable power supply and environmental protection, and actively participates in environmental protection and beach cleaning activities. As of 2004, Taipower power plants have been participating in the adopt a Coastal Clean-Up program to regularly clean up beaches and practice environmental protection. In 2017, Taipower was certified by the Environmental Protection Administration as the "Unit with the Most Frequent Beach Clean-up." In recent years, Taipower has also set up environmental education promotion booths in the venues of its beach cleaning activities. This year, it included a guide to the Gaomei Wetland Ecology and plastic reduction environmental education to give participants of the beach clean-up additional knowledge on environmental protection and the ecology while they are contributing to the beach.
Taipower pointed out that Taiwan is surrounded by the sea. To ensure co-existence and co-prosperity with the marine environment, it hopes to use the beach cleaning activities to recruit more people into taking actions for environmental sustainability. Since 2011, Taipower has been collaborating with the John Tung Foundation in removing a total of more than 263 tons of garbage. The weight of the removed garbage was converted into donations for the "Campus Sports Promotion Project". The project supports mental health promotion and depression prevention in children and adolescents, and promotes prevention of depression on campus, which has helped many students. Hence every bit of individual effort has been brought together to become a great blessing.
