Taipower's approach of reusing power plant coal ash won the 'Taiwan Circular Economy Awards'! As we know, 98% of Taiwan's energy is imported from abroad, one part of which is used for fuel in generating electricity for the public. The by-product of coal after burning is ash, which was only put up for sale as the production material for concrete. Taipower initiated an innovation for using coal ash as a sole construction backfill material to reduce the use of cement and sand. This approach has been applied in more than 100 trench backfills since 2010, and the accumulated quantity of coal ash used has exceeded one million metric tons. Taipower was awarded the first year (2019) 'Taiwan Circular Economy Awards' today (March 26th) from Chung Hua Institution for Economic Research together with other businesses such as AU Optronics Corporation, San Fu Chemical Co., Ltd. and O'right, etc. Taipower expressed its appreciation for being recognized and shall continue its commitment to circular economy and shall strive to manage electricity supply and environmental protection at the same time by reusing coal ash to reduce exploitation of natural resources and carbon emissions.
In order to encourage businesses' commitment to circular economy, Chung Hua Institution for Economic Research held the first 'Taiwan Circular Economy Awards' event, in which 52 businesses with 80 works were nominated for the competition. The awards ceremony was conducted today in the 2019 Smart City Summit & Expo at Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center. Taipower's coal ash reuse also won the silver of 'Innovation Award'. Other awards recipients included AU Optronics Corporation's '100% Water Recycle—zero discharge factory' and Taisugar's 'Pig Bile Shampoo', among which Taipower and Taisugar were the only two state-owned business winners from public sector.
